The Environmental Engineering Association of Thailand (EEAT)was founded in 1983 by an initiative of a group of environmental engineers namely Asso. Prof. Dr. Thongchai Panswad (his position at that time),
Mr. Varit Mongkonsri, Mr. Sakchai Suriyajantratong, and Mr. Suchat Satitmannaitam.The association was first named "Thai Environmental Engineers Association" which later was changed to EEAT in 1992.The association's original purposes were to serve as a technological center for members and to protect the rights of the environmental engineering profession.

For more than 20 years, EEAT has been an educational and technical center which provided its members and the public with the latest information and technologies on environmental management and control.

วัตถุประสงค์

1. To be a professional and technological coordination center for environment-concerned groups.
2. To be a center for service and promotion of environmental pollution control technologies.
3. To set or assure standards, setup Thai technical terms, and compile laws dealing with the environmental engineering profession.
4. To be the representative of Thai environmental engineers in their cooperation with other institutes both locally and abroad.
5. To transfer and promote the practical use of the latest technologies on the environmental pollution management and control.
6. To protect the rights of the environmental engineering professio.

Environmental problems cannot be effectively solved without the public awareness. Thus, EEAT has initiated several programs to instill environmental awareness in the public and the industrial sectors, who are the primary pollutant emission sources to the environment, and encourage them to effectively clean up their own wastes voluntarily. Since 1990, the outstanding environmental protection award is annually presented by EEAT to the industries and communities who intend and success in preservation the environment. In addition, EEAT also gives recognition plaques and certificates to selected persons including industrial entrepreneurs, engineers, and operators for their notable achievement and performance.

EEAT, in conjunction with other organizations, has also organized the annual national seminar on "Conservation of Thailand's Natural Resources and Environment or Thai Environment Forum" which continually receives overwhelming response from the public.

EEAT also works closely with several private and government agencies to preserve the nation's environment and has been participated in many working committees for example:

Founders Committee of the Industrial Water Technology Institute, Department of Industrial Works. Committee of the National Accreditation Council (NAC) for ISO 14000 Certification. Sub-Committee of the Thai Green Label Project, Thai Environment Institute. Sub-Committee for the Environmental Management System Certification, Thai Industrial Standards Institute. Committee for the preparation of the Environmental Management Guidelines for Metal Finishing Industry, Department of Industrial Works. Technical committee for the Draft Standard for Sustainable Forest Management System, Thai Industrial Standards Institute.

EEAT plays a major role in following up and review the government actions and legislation on the environmental issues for the practical techniques. Should there be any impractical laws and regulations on pertinent issues, EEAT will issue a request to responsible bureaus for revision. Some examples of the EEAT's actions and achievements in the past are as follows:

Requested revision of building laws in the sewage treatment and disposal section according to engineering practice. Proposed the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to redefine the term "Septic Tank" to suit the sanitary engineering practice. Requested an import duty exemption for the pollution control equipment and a reduction in electricity charges for pollution control operations. Requested the BMA to issue the design codes for wastewater treatment plants to prevent any disputes between designing engineers and authorized officers. Served as an autonomous organization for equipment testing and certifying.

* Annual national conference and exposition in environment engineering: EEAT '88 to EEAT 2004.

* Annual exhibition and technical seminar on the environment issues: ENTECH ASEAN.

* Technical seminars, workshops, and trainings on interest topics, e.g., "Pollution Prevention and Clean Production" Session.

* Technical tours, e.g., Chongnonsee Waste Water Treatment Plant.

* Technical conferences and seminars abroad, e.g., IAWQ biennial international conference & exhibition, Asean Waterqual, WEFTEC, WEFTEC ASIAN, etc.
